Thank you for visiting the website for That Takes Ovaries.
We have closed shop. Or we are on a very long sabbatical. You can still visit the website by clicking on the button below. And you can still request the script for the play.
We had a great run! We held about 1000 open mike events, dramatic readings and performances of the play, all focused on celebrating women and girls' strength and courage.
Please note: Before we closed, we changed our name and the name of our play to "Bold Women, Brazen Acts." Due to failing health, we did not get a chance to change our website to reflect this. So you will see our old name throughout the website.
Part of the reason for our name change was to fully embrace transgender liberation. The original aim of the phrase "that takes ovaries" was to be a playful twist on "that takes balls." Since our inception, the phrase was all about attitude, not anatomy, as stated in our original book (Three Rivers Press/Random House in 2002). At our subsequent events, anyone who identified as a women or girl was celebrated. This included cisgender, transgender and gender non-conforming women, regardless of possessing anatomical ovaries or not. Men and boys were also celebrated for supporting women. However, just before we closed (around 2016) we decided that full support of the trans liberation movement required a name change. If we resurrect, we will revamp the website to reflect this name change. In the meantime, our website remains as it originally was, both for archival purposes and for the rare person who still wants to consider producing the play, now called Bold Women, Brazen Acts.
